Welcome to MCES

Chinese Language Since 1975

Welcome to Melbourne Chinese Ethnic School (MCES), a community-focused Saturday school providing high-quality Chinese language and cultural education for students of all ages.
I am honoured to continue the legacy of my grandmother, Easter Wu, as the Principal of MCES at 25, carrying forward her mission to promote pride in Chinese heritage and language in Melbourne.

Our Roots & Vision

Founder & Legacy

MCES was founded in 1975 by Easter Wu, my grandmother, and my grandfather, John Wu, They began teaching in modest conditions, personally printing textbooks, and for the first 10 years, did not charge school fees to encourage pride in being Chinese.

Their dedication helped MCES grow into a cornerstone of Melbourne’s Chinese community, and they also helped establish other Chinese schools to make language education accessible to everyone.
Life at MCES

Events

Holiday Homework Awards

At MCES, students are given holiday homework that encourages them to use their imagination and apply the language skills they have learned at school to create their own little booklets. This activity not only helps students deepen their understanding of the Chinese language, but also enhances their creativity as they craft their Holiday Homework projects.

Mother's Day Performance

At MCES, we have always celebrated Mother’s Day, as we believe that mothers are the most important people in the family. Each year, we hold a special Mother’s Day performance on the Saturday that aligns with Mother’s Day. During this celebration, children perform poems, songs, and dances to show their appreciation. We take this opportunity to thank all mothers for raising children and supporting them in every way.

School Anniversary Celebration

Since its establishment in 1975, MCES has proudly provided Chinese language education to the broader community. In 2025, we celebrated our 50th anniversary, marking five decades of supporting anyone interested in learning Chinese and exploring a new language. At MCES, learning a language is more than just mastering words; it is about understanding customs, culture, and people.
Our Achievements

Excellence in Language, Culture & Learning

We take pride in the academic and cultural growth of our students. Our programs foster strong Chinese language skills, cultural understanding, and personal development, helping every child reach their full potential.

MCES students consistently excel in VCE Chinese, achieving raw study scores of 36–38 and scaled results of 46–48 in Units 3 and 4 (2024). These outstanding results place our students in the top 2% of all VCE students, with ATAR-equivalent performance around 98–99%, as shown in the diagram below. This visual highlights their exceptional achievement, reflecting both their dedication and the excellence of our programs, showcasing mastery of Chinese language and deep engagement with Chinese culture.
